Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for cooking and spreading)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook until golden brown, about 10-15 minutes.
  2. While onions caramelize, shape ground beef into patties slightly larger than the bread slices. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Increase heat to medium-high, cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side until desired doneness is reached.
  4. Top each patty with Swiss cheese during the last minute of cooking; cover to melt.
  5. Butter one side of each slice of sourdough. Assemble by placing one slice butter-side down in another skillet, add the cheesy patty, caramelized onions, then top with another slice butter-side up.
  6. Grill until both sides are golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
